Working my winter look

In the last month or so I've become practically inseparable from the following 3 items:
1. My teal vintage turban.
2. My mother's Brown mini-trench with black faux-fur cuffs and collar from the '80's
3. My studded leather fingerless gloves.

On their own they are fantastic. Together they're an unbeatable team - my winter armour against the cold weather and cold world.

Peace out xx

A White Channukah

Happy Channukah! It's still a bit early to know if we're going to have a white Christmas yet, but at least it's turned out to be a white Channukah (even if this really isn't the same at all, as there was never a song called White Channukah...). Anyway. This year Channukah's come early. So early in fact that no one in the Family G household realised it started tonight until I looked it up yesterday afternoon! With half a day to buy presents (and it's supposed to be 8 pressies each), and everyone working full time (ish in my case) presents were a bit on the sparse side tonight. When I say sparse I mean it....I was given an unwrapped Mars bar my Mum had squirrelled in a draw. Not exactly what I'd been hoping/wishing/ visualising for...still at least we have another 7 nights to get it right....fingers crossed!

1 day - 4 lessons

Wow - what a day. Today's been one of those days where as I sit here to write about it I really have to think hard to remember anything! This morning seems like a life time ago (having said that, we've actually just crossed over into a new day to be fair)!

Today started out with a bit of a manic prep for another Charlotte Church shoot. Manic because we were only told about the shoot the day before - which didn't really leave much time for the whole calling-in/appointment/edit thing!!! Anyway, Tamara's a total pro, and Charlotte's lovely and v chilled, so the shoot itself was absolutely fantastic and no-drama as ever. Phew.

They always say you learn (or should learn) something new every day. Well, today I've exceeded myself, and learnt not one, but 4 things.

Lesson 1: I'm crap at party-hopping

To be fair I've known this since I was about 16. I don't know why, but I'm just not the party hopping type. Well actually, it's probably just because I'm a bit lazy. Tonight, as I'm sure you all know was Vogue's Fashion Night Out. I didn't go last year (as I was working for a competing title it didn't seem right), however this year I planned to hit at least 3 parties - Harvey Nic's, Louis Vuitton and Agent Provocateur.

I decided to start of at Louis Vuitton. They sent me an invite. I like invites - they make me feel special and important. I went, I mingled, I bumped into a few familiar faces....and before I new it it was home time! Major fail on the party hopping front.

Lesson 2: Do what's in your heart

Now - truth be told I shouldn't have been partying at all tonight. Tonight was Erev Rosh Hashanah (i.e. Jewish New Year's eve). Unlike British NY, Jewish NY is all about spending time with family and spiritual renewal - not getting pissed on a river boat and watching fireworks. I've never not spent Rosh Hashanah at synagogue and with my family, but what with this whole freelancing thing I really felt I should be out there. Dilemma. After much toing and froing I decided to go out and Vogue-it-up. On reflection/ arriving home, I'm not sure that was the right decision. Work's important, but family first always. Lesson learnt.

Lesson 3: Don't not eat all day and then eat a whole roast dinner and cake at 11.30pm

Not eating all day was never in the plan (I'm really not vain enough for all that) - it really was just one of those days when it didn't happen. The roast - well it had to be eaten - it was my Rosh Hashanah dinner after all. I maybe didn't need to mainline the whole thing in 3 minutes though and then polish it off with a slice (and a bit) or apple cake and a cup of tea. Feel sick.

Lesson 4: Stop resisting the technological revolution!

I've been off email all day, and have just discovered 136 new emails. I think this is my cue to get an upgrade to something a bit more technologically advanced than an old small Nokia!

P.S. Check back for pictures and lots more fun and gossip from Vogue fashion night out tomorrow....for now I'm off to bed!

Mummy cool

The best thing about being freelance (and therefore dirt-poor and forced to move back home in my late twenties) is that I'm getting to spend a lot more time with my lovely family (no, not being sarcastic there, honestly). One thing I'm not loving though is that fact that my mum is currently looking and dressing much better than me. This is wrong because a. we're not in an American teen comedy, and b. I'm the single one, she's already bagged....well, my dad, but hey, he was hot in his day!

Here's a picture of my mum on Saturday night. Skinny jeans teamed with trendy knit and army boots, both in camel - i.e. next seasons hottest colour. Huh. Reckon it's time I upped my game!!

Out with the new, In with the old

Deep breath fashion followers, for this could be my most exciting and revealing blog post yet....ok, so maybe not, but today I spent the afternoon at the Antiques Roadshow - too funny!

The one and only Sebulous - A.R fan extraordinaire. His poor lil' face when they told him there had been a problem with the merchandise truck and he wouldn't be able to get his A.R tea towel. Bless.

Just one of the million queues I spent my afternoon in. I was at the British Museum from 2.30 - 5.30....I spent 3.15 hours of that queuing. Fun. Not. Much.

Good old Fi Brucey in an uncharacteristically not totally hid outfit....must have known I was coming! Bless her though; she was accosted by some right munters wanting pics. It really isn't all glamour!

Proving you can't believe everything you see on't telleh, this may look like a fancy wancy piece of plant art, but is actually faux-piary! Yes, it’s plastic - the cheating bastards!!

Sebulous aka. the eagerest A.R beaver listening very intently while the book expert basically told him he didn't really care about his complete collection of James Bond paperbacks including FOUR 1st editions! Cheek of it!

Ta-da! My Nana Golda's dancing ballerina musical clock which I took to be evaluated. I'm proud to announce that the nice expert man confirmed it is genuine original late 1950's - early 1960's plastique! Yay! As they say, you can't put a price on sentimental value though, and this clock really does mean the world to me - so there you Fabergé eggers!

Sadly this is as close as Seb and I got to the filming today, as we weren't picked out the crowd (ruddy useless antiques we took)! Their loss I say - missed out on some first class telly!

Sun, sand and San Pelligrino...

Ciao ciao, bella, bello…..erm….I’ve just got back from Italy innit! Apart from a slight sunburnt-eyes incident (no, I didn't know it was possible, but apparently it is...and it hurts!) it was glorious week of sun, sand and San Pelligrino. For me holidays are all about sunning, reading, eating and sleeping, and this one ticked all the boxes;

Sunbathed – 10 – 1; 3 -7 daily, for 7 days
Read – Grass stains by Kirsty Robinson (fabulous, touching, thought-provoking) and Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis (witty, funny, fucking terrifying – now living in the freezer Joey from Friends stylee)
Ate – Too much. Honey filled (or integrated as the hotel translated it) wholemeal croissants, at least one custard-filled doughnut per day, pasta with meat, pasta with veg, pasta with fish, mammoth plates of salad, incredibly moreish fried herbs in batter and ice creams the size of my head (no word of a lie)
Slept – endlessly…

See - not lying! Dark chocolate and peach sorbet - best combo in the world (and trust me, I've tried a few)!

Mummy and Daddy G - how cool do they look! I only had to get them a little tipsy to agree to pose on this Disney-esque bench outside an arcade. Fave photo of the holiday though!

Style inspiration...

Italians are known for their style, which I think is somewhat debatable, as if you ask me, the average Italian has no better idea of how to dress than the average anyone else. Having said that the over 60's are glamorous, stylish and sophisticated, so I decided to look to them for a style masterclass...

Va-va-voom indeed (or whatever the Italian equivalent is)! What's not to love here? '60's fluro-floral dress, loads of beads and bangles, leopard print trolley and crazy red hair (both of which I already posses), and tiny pooch...stop me if I'm wrong, but this is a good look!

So maybe my mum and I stalked this lady on the beach for 4 days....does that make us bad people?! It's no excuse, but she looked so good we just couldn't help it. There I was, beach wreck - looking like I may have been washed up in the last storm, and there she was, (in what I really really hope was) an original 1960's quilted yellow velour cut-out detail kaftan with white piping, looking like she'd stepped of the set off Mad Men! Inspirational - must work on that whole groomed thing...

Possibly my favourite Granny however was this lady - partly because she reminded me of my Nana Golda - always my ultimate style icon. Floral midi-length (v on-trend) dress, turquoise turban, blue drop earrings and massive blue cocktail ring - forget Liz (makes me want to) Hurl-ey - this lady has beach glamour locked down.

The nearest you'll get to a Playboy style beach shot of me (unless some serious air-brushing's involved). Despite the fact I packed half-a-ton of glitzy kaftans, it was just too hot for me to contemplate anything that had to go over my head, so I ended up resuscitating this old wrap. Fave new Marc Jacobs bag or arm, and new I-couldn't-afford-the-Karen-Walker-pair-so-had-to-settle-for-Hennes sunnies on, I hit the beach and hoped I didn't bump into anyone I knew/ the most gorgeous man in the world. I didn't.

Poor old LA - always getting shtick for being the most ridiculous place on earth, when here on a little strip of Italian beach on the Adriatic coast a couple pulled out a bamboo mat and bowl filled with premium mineral water for their devil little dog....god help us all!

Yum yum yum - I sacrificed one beach morning to go to the market. How good do these pumpkin tomatoes look? I had to laugh because the first time I ever saw one was in Wholefoods a few years back, and I got all excited and brought one, and a clove of smoked garlic (which later rotted in the back of a cupboard) and paid over a fiver for the two of them! Here in Italy they're almost giving them away. Typical!

Right at the end of the market (which was filled with plastic shoes, non-sensical lycra tops, rip-off bags and kitchen ware) we found this stall selling vintage clothes for basically nothing! Needless to say Mum and I nose-dived in, and dad spent the next hour telling us how nice we looked in stale smelling 2nd hand bargains!

Speaking of which here I am airing out on of my finds. Hand-made, 1970's mini-dress - cute, no? And mummy, also in a market buy - not too shabby, eh?

Apres-Ski-Me!

So, I went awol again. What can I say – I’m a busy girl. As ever, I have an excuse - this time I’ve been gallivanting around Switzerland (via Gatwick and Heathrow in one hellish day) with my darling Mother. We were skiing – although what with the recent weather the trip to mainland Europe was frustratingly superfluous. Neither of us had skied before, and once we’d recovered from the humiliation of spending two days in the under-fives winter wonderland we had a fantastic trip. As with Rome I’ve created a picture diary of the trip. Introducing Après-ski-me!

I got bored waiting for the cab to the airport so decided to turn the contents of my hand luggage into a gift guide on the kitchen table. I always carry my jewellery in my hand luggage, because if my case went missing it’s the thing I’d be most sad to loose. Si without the bling is like Dolce without the Gabbanna.

With 6 hours to kill at Heathrow the only thing to do was eat and shop. Mum fell in love with these tortoise shell Chanel sunnies. Sadly at £263 they weren’t a snip so she left empty handed. Oh Chanel – why do you torture us so….

Continuing my too-poor-to-afford-Chanel theme, here I am modelling my cheap-yet-chic Chanel alternative earmuffs (which were an absolute bargain at £12 from ? in Covent Garden), so there Mr Largerfeld!

I decided my Perspex Vivienne Westwood pendant (which I snapped up for virtually nothing at a sample sale last year) was perfect Après-ski fodder. How fantastically it lifts my otherwise all black attire, not to mention compliments my hot chocolate with double Amaretto and cream (the ideal post-slope beverage FYI).

This being my first time on the slopes, and with most of the shops in the resort being ski-centric, I managed not to blow monthly food allowance on clothes. I did however develop a small crush on these gloves (189 CH, by Roekl), and Helmet (498 CH, by Indigo). If I didn’t spend most of my time on the slopes surrounded by toddlers, and on my back, knees or bum, this is what I’d be wearing to show off in.

From the sophisticated slopes of Switzerland to the ghastly gates of Gatwick. You say mean, I say national service. Whoever you are I hope you’re reading this. There is nothing right about this ensemble. Burn it all and start again. Now. Please.
For the rest of you this is how NOT to do the following trends; stone washed denim, ankle boots, sheepskin jackets, colour clashing, checked shirts, layering. See – learning from others mistakes can be fun.
